Rainbow Words
Rainbow words are a fun challenging way to get your student to master sight words. Sight words are words that are sometimes difficult to sound out or used frequently in text. Rainbow words will allow your students to master these words and will be a crucial part of your child’s reading success. Sight words are categorized by color. RED being the easiest and PURPLE being the hardest.
Your student will be given flash cards of the RED words to start out in their Monday packet. It is your job at home to work with your students at memorizing each word by sight. Once you think they have accomplished this either your student or you can just let me know and we will test them on the words in class. It is important you or your student tell me when they have mastered a color or I will not know to test them.
If they pass, they will be recognized in class and given their next set of words which will be ORANGE. You and your student will continue this all the way up to PURPLE words. The order of the words are RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE and finally, PURPLE. We will have a rainbow in class under each student’s name that will keep track of their progress. You will have over the course of the school year to complete this so have fun with it!
HOMEWORK:
*The following are activities you can do with your child at home. Please pick at least one to complete:
1. Speed Reader -Write the sight words on index cards. Use a stopwatch to time your child as he or she reads a stack of word cards. Write down the time and challenge your child to read the words again and beat his or her time!
2. Word Find –Give your child a page from a newspaper or magazine. Challenge your child to find and then circle or highlight the sight words he or she is learning.
3. House Hunt - Post sight words around the house- on doors, the refrigerator, mirrors, etc. and have your child read them each time he or she passes by them.
4. Messy Spellers - To practice both reading and spelling the words, fill a cookie sheet or large tray with sand, shaving cream, or whipped cream. Help your child to trace out words with a finger and then read them aloud. Wipe them away and start again with new words!
5. Say It Silly-Point to a word on the Rainbow or flash a sight
word card to your child. Have them read the word in a regular voice and then it 2-3 more voices: monster voice, robot voice, whisper voice, grandma’s voice, etc.
6. Loud and Louder-Point to one color arc of the Rainbow. Have
your child begin reading the words in a whisper voice. As read along, have them
gradually increase the volume until they are nearly shouting by the last word
in the arc. Repeat with another color arc of the Rainbow.
7. ABC Order-Choose one set of the Rainbow words (even if they already passed the level). Ask your child to help you put the words in alphabetical order. Repeat with the other sets. Mix them up and play again at any time.
8. Go to A Mom with a Lesson Plan blog to find more fun Rainbow Word activities as well as more lessons and art projects to do at home with your child! http://amomwithalessonplan.com/
For students who are now spelling the words...(messy speller above)
1. Word scramble- print the words cut up each letter and have them make the words like a puzzle. The letters being the pieces. Give them a copy of the words so they have a reference.
2. Word fill- Write down the words from them leaving some letters out and have your student fill in the blanks.
3. Magnetic spelling- If you have magnetic letters like used commonly on refridgerators have them use the letters and make their spelling words.
